Mayor of London Sadiq Khan ‘devastated’ by Grenfell Tower fire

London Mayor Sadiq Khan observes a minute of silence in respect for the victims of the London attack.

LONDON — London Mayor Sadiq Khan has said that he is “truly devastated to see the horrific scenes of the major fire” at Grenfell Tower in Kensington.

He said “my heart goes out to everyone affected” and confirmed the news that there have been fatalities and “more than fifty people have been taken to hospitals.”

“The fire service is dealing with a rapidly changing situation and these numbers are likely to rise.”

A huge fire took over the 24-storey tower block in west London just after 0100 (BST) on Wednesday and was burning for more than six hours later. The tower block is made up of 120 homes containing hundreds of residents.

Speaking on Wednesday morning, Khan said: “I want to thank our incredible firefighters and emergency services for their immense courage, dedication and professionalism.”

The mayor finished by saying: “There will be a great many questions over the coming days as to the cause of this tragedy and I want to reassure Londoners that we will get all the answers.”
